Normally I am writing reviews for The Flash, but I figured I would have a little fun and speculate on everyone’s favorite topic: who is Zoom (voiced by Tony Todd)? Ever since the sinister speedster showed up, there have been hardly any hints as to what his real identity is.
Many people suspect that Zoom is none other than the Earth 1 version of Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears), who is named Hunter Zolomon. Those of you that know your comics will recognize that name as the actual identity of Zoom. Since that is fairly common knowledge, I rate this as the LEAST likely scenario. The show’s writers always love to have twists and turns, so revealing that piece of information with so much time until the season finale seems a little suspect.
Earth 2’s Barry (Grant Gustin) would be another potential, but unlikely suspect. While it would certainly be a shock to find out that the man under the Zoom mask is none other than Barry, trying to steal Barry’s powers, I don’t see the show being that cheesy. There is also the fact that Zoom was able to steal Jay’s powers, but was not able to do that to Barry. This implies that Barry is different than other speedsters, and one would assume Earth 2’s Barry would also be different in that way. Thus, he would recognize Barry, and not need to try to figure out the Flash’s identity. So this is another one that’s low on my suspect list.
One potential candidate for Zoom’s alter-ego is the Earth 2 version of Joe (Jesse L. Martin). This would be a person that is close enough to the team that the reveal would be shocking. Joe is also someone who more or less fits the build of Zoom. The irony of having Earth 2’s Joe trying to kill Barry, when we are used to Joe being a warm, caring father to Barry is too hard to overlook. This is definitely a theory that I think could play out, with one small issue: race. I hate bringing up race in this issue, but in close up pictures you can clearly see that the actor in the Zoom suit has very light skinned eye lids.
This one is a bit out there, but let’s run with it for a second: Earth 2 Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale). While the body type is not a match, there are a few things that really stand out about this being Zoom. First of all this would fall into the category of total shock that no one would see coming. Wally also mentioned in this week’s Fast Lane episode that he “Always wants to go faster.” Granted he was talking about drag racing, but think about it: Zoom wants to increase his own speed by stealing Barry’s. He wants to go faster. That quote was what got me really thinking of him as a possibility. As someone who in the comics does become a speedster, albeit a good one, it would be an easy adaptation to have a “bad” Wally West, like we have seen Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) as Killer Frost, and Ronnie (Robbie Amell) as Deathstorm. Unfortunately this theory plays into the same race issue we have with Joe being Zoom.
Barry’s father, Henry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) from earth 2 is another person being tossed about as a possible Zoom. This is definitely a strong possibility, and we really have not seen much of him, almost as if the writers don’t want us thinking about him. He is also the person on the show who is closest in build to Zoom. While I think this presents the strongest possibility thus far, it was one of the earliest fan predictions. With the writers always trying to keep us on our toes, I don’t know that they would go that route.
Jay Garrick himself is another person we can suspect. While he presents as having lost his powers, and Caitlin’s blood test of him have confirmed that, perhaps he knows how to alter his body chemistry. After all, he is a great scientific mind. Jay has a lot of animosity towards Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh), and it would make sense that as Zoom, he would kidnap Well’s daughter. While we want to dislike and not trust this Wells, and granted he’s done very bad things, he is clearly not pure evil like Earth 1 Wells was. He has a soft spot where Barry is concerned, and really only seems to be bad out of desperation. I think this would also be a great twist on the Hunter Zolomon theory as well; Let’s not have it be Hunter Zolomon, but his Earth 2 counterpart. Now one might argue, “But Jay is the Flash on Earth 2, how can he be Zoom?” To that I say, as a speedster, is there a better way to cover up a life of crime then by also being a hero?
While it is fun to speculate on who Zoom may be, one thing is certain: When we do find out, it is going to be epic.
