Check the mail, fellow Potterheads, I think there’s an owl at your door. Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment teased us a few days ago with the announcement that they’ll be unleashing mobile and console games under the label Portkey Games, all taking place in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world! Top of the list? An interactive augmented reality game titled Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
Since the release of Pokémon GO last summer, Harry Potter fans have clamored for a similar experience to call their own. Who didn’t dream of being a witch or wizard after reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone back in 1997 (yes, it’s been that long)? This game promises to fulfill those dreams and view reality through the lens of witchcraft and wizardry; was the wait worth it? Always.
It’s More Than Just a Harry Potter Game – It’s an Immersive Experience!
This exciting new addition to the Harry Potter universe is being developed by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment and the more recognizable Niantic Inc, the developers for Pokémon Go. Similarly to Go, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite promises to turn your reality into the wizarding world. Fight fantastic beasts, learn spells, and take on enemies all in your own backyard! Portkey’s promised we’ll meet characters from our beloved book series and discover magical (and likely mysterious) artifacts as we go about our day-to-day lives. The chance to mold our Wizarding Careers couldn’t have come sooner!
While there is no official release date as of yet, Portkey Games has given us (albeit vague) 2018 time frame. You can sign up for updates on Wizards Unite at the official site. Maybe a dark wizard has them under a strong compulsion spell to not spill anything. Someone call an auror! Do keep in mind that 2018 is also when the next Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them film premieres. If that doesn’t spell “special event” then I don’t know what does. Hopefully it will be similar to the recent release of the Legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Go. Also, fear not for your favorite augmented reality game, Pokémon trainers; Niantic released a statement promising fans they’re not done with the groundbreaking mobile game that made them a household name:
“Just like many of you, we’re super excited about Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and are working hard with our partners at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and WB Games San Francisco’s development team to bring that to life. However, we–the Pokémon Go development team–want to say that we are 100% committed to creating an ever-changing and growing game that gets our players exploring, meeting each other, and deepening their connection to the Pokémon universe. We’re actively expanding the Pokémon Go development team to build many more amazing features in 2018. Stay tuned for an update next week on upcoming improvements to certain features.”
Stay tuned for more information as it comes! This witch, for one, is getting her wand prepped and ready.
