Astra Lost in Space Hurls Readers to the Far Reaches

Can Nine Strangers Find Their Way Home From 5,000 Light-Years Away?

Kids in peril seem to be quite popular with pop culture fans these days. From the Hunger Games series to VIZ Media’s upcoming new release, The Promised Neverland, death and danger force them to confront issues far beyond their age. Now you can add one more title from the largest manga publisher stateside to that “dire situation” wishlist: Astra Lost in Space. First serialized by Weekly Shōnen Jump, this sci-fi manga blends survival with laughs wonderfully.

Itʼs the first day of Planet Camp, and Aries Spring couldnʼt be more excited! She, along with eight other strangers, leave for Planet McPa for a weeklong excursion. Shortly after arriving, however, a strange orb appears and transports them into the depths of space. There, they find an empty floating spaceship…

Astra Lost in Space follows Aries Spring and the other members of Group B-5 aboard the mysterious spaceship Astra. She’s a cheerfully optimistic but terribly forgetful girl. Kanata Hoshijima, the other lead, is a “steadfast-hero” type willing to sacrifice himself to save others. He even follows the trope of naming his techniques, though he tends to mess them up. This ragtag ensemble cast brave the perils and isolation of deep space, 5,000 lightyears from home. Will they ever see their families again? Why was the Astra abandoned so far away—how did it even get there? Mysteries are abound from page one in this premiere manga!

From the Acclaimed Author of Sket Dance Comes a New Action-Packed Sci-Fi Manga December 5th!

Creator Kenta Shinohara first got his start assisting legendary manga artist Hideaki Sorachi on the iconic series Gintama. He created and wrote Sket Dance, which also ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump, and won the Shogakukan Manga Award for the series. Fans of both manga know how well they balance lighthearted, goofy humor with serious action and emotional issues. If Astra Lost in Space pans out like either of those, we’re in for a real treat. Just take it from VIZ Media editor Marlene First:

Astra Lost in Space has thrilled readers of the Weekly Shōnen Jump free section with its engaging characters, unpredictable plot twists and next-level storytelling. We’re proud to present readers with the series’ print release and invite them to experience a fantastic sci-fi survival epic this winter!”

What mysteries lie in wait for the Astra crew? Find out when the premiere volume drops December 5th! It’s currently available for digital download on VIZ Media’s site and their manga app. You can preview of Volume 1 and check out a litany of chapters courtesy of Weekly Shōnen Jump.
